The History Behind the Model

The Yacht: Columbia (1899 & 1901) The Columbia is one of the most famous vessels in competitive sailing history. Launched in 1899, this American racing yacht was an absolute powerhouse on the water. She is best known for being the very first vessel to win the prestigious America's Cup twice. She successfully defended the cup in 1899 against the British challenger Shamrock, and then returned to make history in 1901 by successfully defending the cup a second time against Shamrock II.

The Designer: Nathanael G. Herreshoff Known affectionately in the sailing world as the "Wizard of Bristol," Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (1848–1938) was a brilliant American naval architect and mechanical engineer. Between 1893 and 1920, he designed an unprecedented succession of undefeated America's Cup defenders. His innovative hull designs, meticulous attention to weight distribution, and advanced rigging completely revolutionized the world of competitive sailing.

The Builder: Herreshoff Manufacturing Company Founded in Bristol, Rhode Island in 1878 by Nathanael and his blind older brother, John Brown Herreshoff, the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company was the premier yacht-building facility of its era. They built some of the world's most famous, elegant, and technologically advanced yachts.
