A Brief History of the S.S. Limehouse

The S.S. Limehouse was an early 20th-century British merchant cargo ship.

• Construction: The ship was constructed on the River Tyne by the notable shipbuilding firm William Dobson & Co. Ltd. at their Low Walker shipyard. It was completed around 1903/1904 (Yard Number 129).

• William Dobson & Co.: Founded in 1883, William Dobson & Co. was a prominent shipbuilder in Newcastle on Tyne, known for constructing sturdy colliers, cargo vessels, and passenger ships before eventually closing its doors in 1928.

• Life at Sea: The S.S. Limehouse (Official Number 118317) sailed as a working cargo vessel during a period of massive expansion in global shipping. She survived the dangerous waters of World War I, operating under the name Limehouse from 1903 until at least 1919.

• Later Years: The ship was later sold and renamed the SS York valley. Under the name York valley, she continued to haul cargo until approximately 1935, when records indicate the vessel was lost or wrecked.
