Vintage Framed Lithograph: Iron Steam-Boat Company of New York
Item #: 4102
Description
Step back into the late 19th century with this incredible piece of New York maritime and tourism history. This large, beautifully detailed advertising lithograph was originally "Presented by The Iron Steam-Boat Company," a famous transit line that ferried thousands of eager tourists and city dwellers from Manhattan out to the burgeoning amusement parks of Coney Island.
Printed by the renowned Donaldson Brothers (Five Points, N.Y.), the central diamond showcases a magnificent sidewheel paddle steamer, packed with passengers and proudly flying the American flag. The border of the diamond lists the company's iconic fleet of seven iron-hulled sister ships, all famously named after constellations: Cygnus, Cetus, Cepheus, Perseus, Pegasus, Taurus, and Sirius.
Surrounding the central ship are four beautifully rendered vignettes depicting the line's ports of call and popular destinations, including:
-
"Pier 1 N.R." (North River/Manhattan)
-
"Iron Pier, Coney Island"
-
"Bay Ridge, Sea Beach Landing"
-
A Staten Island landing scene
Presented in a substantial, classic wood frame with a wide, neutral mat, this oversized promotional print is an absolute treasure for collectors of New York City history, antique advertising, and vintage maritime memorabilia.
