The History of the Jolie Brise

The Jolie Brise is one of the most famous and celebrated sailing vessels in maritime history, with a legacy that spans over a century.

• Origins: The ship was built and launched in Le Havre, France, in 1913. Originally designed for the pilot trade, she represents the ultimate development of the sailing pilot cutter before the maritime industry transitioned from sail to steam power.

• Historic Milestones: She is widely believed to be the very last sailing vessel to carry the Royal Mail under sail.

• Racing Legend: In 1924, she was purchased by E.G. Martin, a founding member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC). Under his command, the Jolie Brise won the inaugural Fastnet Race in August 1925. She ultimately won three of the first five Fastnet Races and was awarded the prestigious Blue Water Medal twice, cementing her status as an offshore racing icon.

• Modern Era: In 1977, Dauntsey's School in the UK secured the use of the vessel via a long-term lease. The school purchased her outright in 2003, and she continues to serve as an active sail training vessel for students today.
