History & Provenance
The Golden Age of Yachting This model represents the pinnacle of early 20th-century yacht racing, heavily inspired by the majestic "Big Class" cutters and America's Cup defenders of the era. During this time, syndicates of wealthy industrialists commissioned massive, heavily canvased sloops to compete for international glory. These vessels were characterized by their impossibly long overhangs (the portion of the bow and stern extending beyond the waterline) and towering masts designed to carry an astonishing amount of sail area.
The Designer: Inspired by Nathanael G. Herreshoff The distinctive hull shape and extreme proportions of this model are the unmistakable hallmarks of designs by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (1848–1938), arguably the most brilliant yacht designer in American history. Known as the "Wizard of Bristol," Herreshoff revolutionized yacht design and produced an undefeated string of America's Cup defenders between 1893 and 1920 (including legendary ships like Vigilant, Defender, Columbia, and the massive Reliance).
The sweeping lines, deep fin keel, and massive sail plan seen on this model reflect Herreshoff's genius engineering, which prioritized maximum waterline length when heeling (leaning into the wind) to achieve unprecedented speeds.
